PRE/PRO- biotics


PREBIOTICS- Prebiotics are a special form of dietary fiber that cannot be digested and that provides nourishment to the thousands of good bacteria already living in the colon and  lower your risk for diarrhea . It is like food to the good bacteria that grows in the body to fight bad bacteria.

Eg of prebiotic naturally found are – garlic ,raw onions, raw wheat barn, raw chicory root and banana are few examples.

PROBIOTICS-“Probiotics are those living microorganisms that are similar to those naturally found in the gastrointestinal system.They play an important role in supplementing the presence of the good bacteria in the body.

Eg of probiotic food- Yogurt, Sauerkraut,Miso,Kombucha tea.

Nowadays the concept has now moved markedly towards digestive health. Probiotics and prebiotics are increasingly being added to food stuffs but processed and packaged foods and juices won’t give you the benefit you may be looking for with claims of health benefits regarding digestive health and immunity.

Many commercial foods are being marketed as probiotic-rich, but one should choose carefully, since some of these foods are very high in sugars and contain empty calories i.e. devoid of vitamins and minerals.So be smart when you buy those pre packed yogurts,smoothies. Active colonies in supplements decrease over time, so check the “best buy” date. Probiotic supplements are sensitive to heat, light and moisture and may require refrigeration.
